The Sound of Silence

1/11/2013

As part of the Manchester Science Festival we went to the anechoic chamber at the University of Salford. Normally sounds in a room bounce around the walls and floor and reverberate before being heard. In this room there is a layer of thick triangular foam covering the walls, floor and ceilings. This acts in the opposite way of the cone on a trumpet absorbing sounds in to the room - the result is a room that is totally silent and quite disconcerting. We listened to a balloon being popped in there and it made the tiniest of squeaks.
