Guidelines for grommets

16/7/2013

The American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) have just published some clinical practice guidelines on tympanostomy tubes (grommets). Interestingly, they have recommended that water precautions should NOT be advised

"Clinicians should not encourage routine, prophylactic water precautions (use of earplugs or headbands; avoidance of swimming or water sports) for children with tympanostomy tubes"

This will be a huge relief for parents of kids who have grommets and whereas children with grommets may get infections and discharging ears from swimming, this is not always the case, they can usually be treated and swimming is an important skill for kids to learn and lots of fun!
